In recognition of Deaf Awareness Week, the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts (VMT) launched its new Student Spotlight Series to highlight exceptional Gladiators who demonstrate dedication, talent, and resilience through artistic expression.
The inaugural spotlight features two inspiring fine arts students, Mia Pedraza and Anthony Castillo, who continue to excel in their respective disciplines while serving as role models for their peers.
Mia Pedraza’s artistic talents span multiple fields, including drawing, sculpture, photography, and technical theater. Working alongside her dedicated teachers and interpreters, Mia has consistently pushed past obstacles, building confidence with every project. Her journey serves as a powerful testament that being Deaf or hard of hearing never limits a person's creative vision or abilities.
Equally passionate in his craft is Anthony Castillo, who uses theater as his platform for storytelling. Through acting and directing, Anthony brings joy and laughter to audiences while continually stepping out of his comfort zone and remaining true to his authentic voice.
"You have true potential," said Anthony when sharing his message with other Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. "You are not defined by your disability. The harder the journey, the stronger you become."
Both students reflect VMT's mission of providing an inclusive, empowering environment where all students can develop their talents, express themselves freely, and prepare for future success.
By showcasing the accomplishments of Mia and Anthony, VMT honors Deaf Awareness Week while reminding the entire school community that passion, drive, and creativity bridge every barrier.
