VMT Alumna Crystal Perrusquia Selected to Create Official 129th Washington's Birthday Celebration Artwork

LAREDO, TX — The Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts (VMT) is celebrating a major achievement by one of its own graduates. Class of 2026 alumna Crystal Perrusquia has been selected as the official artist for the 129th Washington's Birthday Celebration commemorative poster.

Perrusquia, who is currently pursuing a degree in architecture, spent months perfecting her winning piece, titled "Our Traditions Shine." The digital artwork captures the vibrant spirit, bright nightlife, and rich heritage of Laredo’s signature community celebration. Her painstaking design process spanned several months, including countless dedicated hours throughout the summer.

As a special nod to her artistic roots, Perrusquia included a hidden detail within the artwork: a subtle homage to VMT tucked into the design for eagle-eyed viewers to spot.

The official unveiling event brought together community members, festival organizers, and supporters, including Perrusquia's former VMT art teacher, Mrs. Brooke Berrios, who stood alongside her former student to celebrate the milestone.

"Watching Crystal grow as an artist during her time at VMT and now seeing her work showcased on such a historic, citywide platform is an incredible honor," said Mrs. Brooke Berrios. "She put so much heart, discipline, and detail into 'Our Traditions Shine,' and seeing her include a subtle tribute to her VMT roots makes this moment even more special."

Campus leadership echoed the pride felt across the school community.

"We are incredibly proud to see Crystal taking the skills and passion she cultivated at VMT into her higher education and beyond," leadership shared. "Her artwork not only honors Laredo's longest-standing traditions, but also represents the creative excellence of our entire Gladiator family."

Perrusquia’s selection serves as an inspiring reminder to current VMT students that the creative foundations built on campus continue to shine brightly on major stages long after graduation.
