The strings of the Vidal M. Treviño (VMT) School of Communications and Fine Arts were heard loud and clear this week at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) during the prestigious “Día de la Guitarra” Guitar Ensemble Competition & Festival. Representing Laredo with technical precision and artistic flair, the VMT guitar program faced off against top tier talent from across the region. The school competed in both the Large Guitar Ensemble and Guitar Quartet divisions, ultimately securing a prestigious 2nd place finish in the Quartet category.
The "Día de la Guitarra" festival is known for its rigorous standards, bringing together the most promising young guitarists for a day of intensive performance and masterclasses. For the VMT students, the second place trophy is a testament to the countless hours of rehearsal spent perfecting their repertoire.
The students were led by their instructor, Mr. Morales, whose guidance has been instrumental in the ensemble's recent string of successes.
Reflecting on the students' performance and the significance of the event, Mr. Morales praised the group's poise under pressure.
"Competing at the collegiate level at UTRGV is a challenge that requires more than just technical skill; it requires heart and mental focus," said Mr. Morales. "I am incredibly proud of how our students represented VMT. Taking home 2nd place in the Quartet division is a major achievement, but seeing them grow as musicians and support one another on such a big stage is the real win."
The success in Edinburg adds another chapter to VMT’s storied history of fine arts excellence. By competing in both the Large Ensemble and Quartet divisions, the school demonstrated the depth and versatility of its music program.
As the guitarists return to Laredo with their hardware in hand, the VMT community is celebrating their hard work and dedication. This latest accolade serves as a reminder that the future of classical and contemporary guitar in South Texas is in very capable hands.
Congratulations to our talented guitarists for their stellar performance. Way to represent VMT!
