The GECHS Class of 2026 concluded their “Last First Week” with Senior Sunrise on Friday, August 15.

The launch of the Drive Sames for Education Perfect Attendance Incentive Program took place yesterday, August 14. Now celebrating its 13th year, Sames proudly maintains its generous support for this initiative, recognizing students for their commitment to achieving perfect attendance. Students will have the opportunity to drive off in a brand-new 2026 Chevrolet Trax on Graduation Day! GECHS Phoenix proudly participated in this event, Go Phoenix! #PhoenixPride #AttendanceMatters

Laredo’s combined law enforcement officials including Laredo ISD Police Departments, in conjunction with the City of Laredo Police Department, the Webb County Sheriff’s Office, and the Constable’s Office reminded the public about school bus safety, speed limits and the use of electronic devices while driving in school zones. Monday, August 11, is the first day of class for Laredo ISD.

A special recognition goes to Sara Contreras, who secured 2nd place in the Lesson Planning and Delivery—Spanish category, and Alberto Vargas, who advanced to the semi-finals in the Lesson Planning and Delivery—CTE. This prestigious conference, held in Orlando, Florida, aimed to empower the leaders of tomorrow, as emphasized by Educators Rising. All three students deserve a heartfelt round of applause for their dedication, professionalism, and passion for education. They proudly represented GECHS and LISD at the national level, competing alongside over 3,600 exceptional students from across the United States. Congratulations to Yvana Guzman, a rising Senior at Hector J. Garcia Early College High School, for completing the Subiendo Academy Leadership Program at University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs School of Business. Yvana was selected from over 700 applicants across the state of Texas and was one of only five students representing our city—alongside outstanding peers from St. Augustine High School, John B. Alexander High School, and Julieta & Frank Staggs Academy. The Subiendo: Academy for Rising Leaders is a prestigious five-day intesive program that empowers high-achieving Texas high school students through hands-on learning in business, leadership, and problem-solving. Students explored critical topics in healthcare, energy/environment, and education, attended leadership workshops, and competed in a real-world case challenge. Yvana stands out for her exceptional public speaking skills, Her natural ability to communicate ideas effectively and the coaching she's received throughout her participation in UIL Congressional Debate makes her a strong leader and team collaborator. Yvana’s participation demonstrates her dedication, excellence, and bright future. Congratulations to Yvana on this incredible achievement!
