Vidal M. Treviño

School History

The Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts was opened by the Laredo Independent School District in the fall of 1993. The school started without any permanent buildings, and instead used available locations at the Laredo Civic Center and the near-by Holding Institute. At other times classes were taught at the LISD Board Room and under the trees at historic St. Peter's Plaza. On April 8, 1994 then Governor of Texas, Ann Richards, attended inauguration ceremonies to officially open the school and name it after its founder, then LISD Superintendent Vidal M. Treviño.

The school’s first director was Mr. Roberto C. Botello (1993 – 1996). Others followed: Mr. John Cox (1996 – 2000), Mr. Ernesto Guajardo (2000 – 2003), Mr. Blas A. Martinez (2003– 2005), Mr. Jose M. Cerda (2005 – 2008), Dr. Martha E. Villarreal (2008-2020).  Currently, the school is under the direction of Mr. Mario A. Mireles with the assistance of Ms. Lori Moreno.

Throughout its twenty-seven years of existence, VMT, as it is more commonly known, has managed to weave itself into the educational and cultural fabric of the city of Laredo with superior results. The school has also made its mark at the state, national, and international levels of performance and competition. It has continued to thrive and offer more services to its students through the years.

Students from all three LISD high schools - Cigarroa High School, Martin High School and Nixon High School - meeting all entrance requirements, attend the school either in the morning or afternoon. They take two core academic courses and two communications or fine arts courses. Academic courses are taught at the Pre-AP (9th and 10th grade) and AP level (11th and 12th grade), which present a more rigorous curriculum than regular level academic classes. Also, students are afforded the opportunity to enroll in Dual Enrollment program which allows students the opportunity to attain college credit while duly enrolled at Laredo College and VMT.
