"Welcome to the Vidal M. Treviño Magnet
School Learning Experience...
The Vidal M. Treviño Magnet
school of Communication and Fine Arts was founded in 1993, the
citys first and only high school for Communication and the Visual
and Performing Arts. It was also one of the first schools of its
kind in Texas. It was founded on the conviction that academics and
the arts are equally important to student development and
achievement. VMT provides hope to students who otherwise would not
have the opportunity to develop their innate talents. ....the
school develops the whole individual.
What makes VMT special? The
uniqueness of this school is in the way the arts are integrated
throughout the academic curriculum motivating students with a
variety of learning styles to succeed in high school and in their
pursuit of a higher education. VMT is a school that is committed to
providing a rigorous academic and art education program to students
who desire to pursue their artistic talents. Historical data
reflect the success rate of our students in not only the
state-mandated exams, and the high level of artistic performance,
but most importantly in the high percentage of students completing
a college education in fields that they have been exposed to in
this campus. We have voluminous success stories and many of the
valedictorians, salutatorian and, National Merit Scholars are VMT
students. In addition, while we have a wide-diversity of
academically prepared students, all VMT students perform at the
high 90s level and manage to attain commended performance
recognition. This is due to the collaborative and specialized
teaching provided by our staff, the high expectations we have of
all, the integrated and cross-disciplinary infusion of innovation
and creativity in the every day learning experience and the
team-approach to learning and teaching that is the norm at VMT.
VMTs goals center on the artistic and cognitive development of our
students, the continued strong ties and support of the community
and, most especially, the continued strong partnerships with both
Texas A & M University and the Laredo Community College.
VMTs
vision is focused on the three strands: globalization; advanced
technologies and building relationships. Our students must be ready
to compete in a global environment, be ready to adapt to new
situations, think critically, must possess advanced technological
skills and be able to understand the importance of building
relationships in order to solve problems. In order to accomplish
this, the school understands that learning can not stand still. VMT
is a community of learners where real problems are solved
collaboratively, creatively and where continuous learning is
embraced by all. The teaching staff is truly committed to provide a
unique learning experience by planning and creating integrated
projects and authentic learning opportunities. The faculty at VMT
is comprised of exceptional teachers who are able to make winners
of most all the students. A high percentage of our students attain
commended performance status in their state exams. Our Newspaper,
the Magnet Tribune, and our literary magazine, Tapestry achieve top
scores and superior ranking year after year. Every fine arts
department has attained a high level of recognition not only at the
local and regional level, but at the state and national level as
well. Truly, the pride that our students feel for all they do here
makes their years spent here a very memorable moment in time.
Central to the life-changing experiences VMT provides our students
is the strong and all-encompassing Character Education Program we
infuse throughout their four year stay at this campus. I feel
strongly that an integral component in the development of the whole
student is the need to instill those values that will help them
make good decisions and lead to the improvement of humanity as a
whole ...understanding the responsibility they have in the
betterment of this community and society as a
whole.
